CHAPTER TEN

Juliet woke up to the sounds of her neighborhood. The singing birds, the sound of the elevated train running in the distance, her neighbor’s lawnmower, and barking beagles were her morning reveille.

She pulled the covers over her head. Get up, you have work to do.

If she could only get through the day, go grocery shopping, prepare a test, workout, and keep her mind off a certain gorgeous man, then she would be fine. She threw off the blanket and stomped off to the bathroom. She was wearing her Rolling Stones t-shirt and boxer shorts that a student had brought her from London, and her hair was messy waves from sleep and last night’s overabundance of mousse. She looked at herself in the mirror. She felt like Dracula’s mother.

She walked barefoot into the kitchen, made coffee, checked the mail and read a postcard from her daughter while she waited for the dark roast to brew. ‘Paris is lovely,’ her daughter wrote, ‘wish you were here.’ Did she wish she was in Paris? You bet, with a certain someone. She had never been to Paris with a lover. That was one of the things she had put on her list of life goals a long time ago.

She walked out on her deck and saw two bodies sitting at her pine table. She almost dropped the cup. One was the dummy from the night before, the other was wearing a camouflage shirt and ripped shorts and dirty sneakers.

“That coffee smells good,” he said to her, looking her up and down. “Mind if I get a cup for me and my friend?”

She stared at him open-mouthed, blinking a little in the strong sunlight.

“Good morning, Miss teacher, good morning to you,” he half sing-songed with a grin.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, pulling out her shirt a little to hide her bosom.

He caught the gesture and grinned again appreciatively.

“I came back to give you a piece of my mind,” he said, “and I guess I wanted to see if that dude had spent the night. I was so jealous after I left you, I almost got into a fight.”

“Really?” she sat down at the table with her coffee, fascinated at his intensity. A fight over her.

“Yeah, some guy was trying to tell me that Michael Jordan wasn’t a great basketball player, only lucky, and I had to straighten him out a little.” He laughed. “So, I did.”

“Was this in a tavern by any chance?” she inquired sweetly.

“I stopped for a short beer after I left you, how could I sleep knowing you were up here with some other guy?” He looked at the mannequin slumped in the chair and grimaced. “Friend of yours? Another warning?”

“Of course not,” she lied, “I use it in one of my classes.”

He stared at her. “Liar. This was another scare from your student. He’s trying to act like a rich boy gangbanger. He’s trying to scare you.”

“He will go away,” she said firmly. “He’ll move on.”

Jim looked at her thoughtfully.
